EDA RANU is wholly owned by the State through a shareholding held by IPBC. It is the company responsible for the provision of water and sewerage services in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.
EDA RANU - the Motuan phrase for “Our Water” - formally took control of the running of the water and sewerage services of Port Moresby on 1st November 1996.
The National Capital District Commission Act (Transfer of Assets, etc) 1996, made provision for the transfer of the Water and Sewerage Division of NCD from NCD to NCD WATER & SEWERAGE PTY LIMTED, when it took on the responsibility of providing the supply of fresh water and treatment and disposal of sewage within the NCD.
The NCD Water and Sewerage Act 1996 was specifically formulated for EDA RANU. This Act authorizes and regulates the operations of the water supply and sewerage systems.
Future Plans
Plans are at an advanced stage for the upgrading of the Port Moresby sewerage system at an estimated cost of around K250 million. This project is expected to commence by 2010. Consideration is also being given to construction of a water bottling plant and for installation of pre-paid water meters. A new water treatment facility will also be built at Mt Eriama.
