MVIL is wholly owned by the State through a shareholding held by IPBC. In January, 1999, the Motor Vehicle Insurance Trust was re-capitalized as at 31 December 1998. The successor company is Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd.
MVIL was established by the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act, as amended, to act as the sole Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurer of all motor vehicles in PNG on January 14, 1998 (following legislative changes introduced by the Government in December 1997).
It also undertakes road safety Initiatives and provides Registry and Licensing Services.
